Mahaffie Visits Your School Request Form

Mahaffie offers two education programs that can be taken "on the road" to your school.

Both programs are recommended for Grades 3-8.

The Tragic Prelude

The Mahaffie family moved to Kansas in 1857 during the days of Bleeding Kansas. Explore life on the Kansas/Missouri border during the Border and Civil Wars that lead into the American Civil War.

This program is typically split into different educational activities with students rotating between the stations.  Activities can include but are not limited to:

  • Civil War artillery drilling
  • Write letters "home" with a real ink pen
  • Camp like a Civil War soldier

Home on the Range

Students explore the lives of cowboys who traveled the Kansas frontier with herds of Texas cattle after the Civil War. Many of the tools, skills and words used by American cowboys trace their beginnings to the vaqueros of Mexico. Discover these connections and find out if the lives of 1860s Kansas cowboys match what you see in the movies.

This program is typically split into different educational activities with students rotating between the stations.  Activities can include but are not limited to:

  • Cowboy Gear
  • Rope a "Steer"
  • Brand leather with a branding iron
